Last updated: October 2026

In the United Kingdom, the minimum doctoral stipend for 2026/27 is £21,805 per year — and you pay no income tax on it. In Switzerland, national research funding guidelines put a doctoral salary at CHF 50,000 to 55,000 per year. In Germany, most doctoral researchers are not students at all: they are university employees with a payslip, pension contributions and paid leave.

Most advice about doing a PhD abroad talks about admission and forgets to explain the money, which is backwards, because the funding model decides how you apply. Getting a funded PhD abroad means matching your profile to a country's model — a German supervisor contract, a British studentship, an American program stipend, or a salaried Scandinavian job — and then starting 10 to 12 months before your intended start date. This guide lays out each model with its verified 2026-27 figures, then a month-by-month plan for the September 2027 intake.

The seven funding models at a glance

Pathway Typical duration Funding (verified 2026-27 figures) Admission route
Germany — supervisor + employment contract 3-4 years TV-L E13 2026 table: €4,759-€6,765 gross per month at 100 percent; doctoral contracts usually written at 50-75 percent. DAAD alternative: €1,400 per month plus €460 annual research allowance Email professors directly, or apply to advertised positions
United Kingdom — studentship 3-4 years UKRI minimum stipend £21,805 for 2026/27, tax-free, around £2,000 more in London Apply to a program with a research proposal, then compete for studentships
United States — program stipend 5-6 years $25,000-35,000 average annual stipend; $40,000-50,000 at top STEM programs; NSF fellowships pay $37,000 Apply to the department: transcripts, statements, recommendation letters, then coursework and qualifying exam
Sweden, Norway, Denmark — salaried position 4 years Sweden: 31,600-34,000+ SEK per month. Norway: 550,800-565,000 NOK per year. Denmark: around DKK 31,840 per month plus pension Apply to a posted vacancy exactly like a job; very few seats
Netherlands — employed doctoral candidate 4 years CAO NU scale P: €3,204-€4,051 per month from 1 July 2026, plus 8 percent holiday and 8.33 percent year-end allowances Apply to an advertised, fully funded vacancy
Switzerland — assistantship 3-4 years SNSF salary guideline CHF 50,000-55,000 per year; ETH Zurich total employment cost CHF 73,100-83,500 by year Apply to advertised assistant positions
China — CSC government scholarship typically 3-4 years CNY 3,500 per month, plus tuition waiver, free university housing and medical insurance Secure university admission, then apply for the CSC scholarship

Read the table as a menu, not a ranking. The right choice depends on whether you already hold a master's degree, how sharp your research proposal is, and how much time you can invest before September 2027.

Germany: find the professor first, the contract follows

The German model is built on the supervisor. In the classic "individual doctorate" you identify a professor whose group works on your topic, convince them by email and a strong CV, and agree on a dissertation project. Funding then attaches to you in one of two ways.

The first is employment. Doctoral researchers are typically hired on a TV-L E13 contract at 50 to 75 percent of the full table. The 2026 TV-L E13 table runs from about €4,759 to €6,765 gross per month at 100 percent depending on seniority step, so a 75 percent contract in a higher step lands comfortably above most scholarships anywhere in the world. You are an employee: social security, paid vacation, pension.

The second is the DAAD scholarship, now €1,400 per month for doctoral candidates — raised from €1,300 in February 2026 — plus a €460 annual research allowance, health insurance and travel support. DAAD deadlines typically fall 10 to 12 months before the intended start, which for a 2027 start means applying in the 2026 window that is open now.

The Germany-specific skill is the supervisor email. Professors receive dozens of generic messages per week and answer almost none of them; the ones that get replies name a specific recent paper from that group and connect it to the applicant's own work. Our guide on how to email a professor for a PhD gives the full anatomy, templates included. And because advertised German positions ask for a motivation letter, the rules in our motivation letter mistakes guide apply to academic job letters too.

United Kingdom: the research proposal carries the money

In the British system you apply to a department with a concrete research idea, and the funding is a separate competition layered on top. The document that decides both is the proposal: a focused few thousand words positioning your question in the literature and a method to answer it.

The money is generous by stipend standards. UKRI's minimum doctoral stipend for 2026/27 is £21,805 per year, a 4.9 percent rise from £20,780 in 2025/26, effective from 1 October 2026, paid tax-free, with around £2,000 additional funding for students based in London. Individual programs and charities often pay more, but almost never less.

The trade-off is competition and timing: major studentship competitions open in autumn 2026 and most close between December and February for an autumn 2027 start. A proposal drafted in October can be refined with supervisors before those deadlines; a proposal drafted in March has nowhere to go. If you have never written one, start from our PhD research proposal guide, and if your master's thesis already contains a literature review, our research proposal template shows how to compress it.

United States: you are admitted by a program, not a professor

The American model inverts Europe. You apply to a department, you are admitted by a committee, and your first two years are coursework, followed by a qualifying exam, and only then full-time dissertation research. That structure is why US doctorates run five to six years, and why you can be admitted straight from a bachelor's degree — the master's is built into the program.

Funding is program-level: teaching assistantships, research assistantships on grant-funded projects, and fellowships. National survey data from the NSF puts typical stipends at $25,000-35,000 per year, with $40,000-50,000 at the strongest STEM programs, and the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship pays $37,000. Application windows cluster between December 2026 and February 2027 for autumn 2027 entry, which makes this the only model on the list where the professor email matters less than the statement of purpose and recommendation letters.

Scandinavia, the Netherlands and France: the PhD is a paid job

In Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands, a doctoral position is a formal salaried job with a job code, a collective agreement and annual salary steps. There is no tuition, no stipend lottery — and very few openings, which is why these positions attract several hundred applicants each.

Sweden starts doctoral employees at around 31,600 SEK per month at Stockholm University in 2025-2026, while Uppsala's SACO agreement effective 1 October 2026 starts at 34,000 SEK and rises to 43,900 SEK once you complete 80 percent of the doctorate; KTH's revised agreement also takes effect on 1 October 2026. Norway advertised a 2026 doctoral position at Nord University at 550,800-565,000 NOK per year — roughly 45,000-47,000 NOK per month — under official position code 1017. In Denmark, Aarhus University lists DKK 252.04 per hour as of April 2026, and the University of Copenhagen advertises DKK 31,840 per month plus pension, with a fellowship cohort starting January 2027.

The Netherlands runs the same logic through the CAO NU collective agreement, scale P: from 1 July 2025 the scale ran €3,059-€3,881, and from 1 July 2026 it rises to €3,204-€4,051 per month, with an 8 percent holiday allowance and an 8.33 percent year-end allowance on top. France closes the loop with the contrat doctoral: a legal minimum gross salary of €2,300 per month from 1 January 2026, up from €2,200 in 2025, for three-year contracts that can be split between a laboratory and a company.

How do you win one? The same way you win any job: match the call almost word for word. These vacancies list specific project topics, methods and required skills; applications that show exactly those keywords survive the first sift, and generic academic CVs do not. methodological fit beats prestige in this region.

Switzerland: the best-paid doctoral contracts in Europe

Switzerland combines the Scandinavian employment model with the highest salary level on the continent. At ETH Zurich, the total employment cost of a fully employed doctoral assistant from 1 January 2026 is CHF 73,100 in the first year, CHF 78,300 in the second and CHF 83,500 in the third. The Swiss National Science Foundation's guideline salary range for doctoral students, effective 1 January 2026, is CHF 50,000-55,000 per year.

The trade-offs are real: living costs are the highest in Europe, positions are competitive at a global level, and most contracts assume you arrive with a strong master's and immediately produce. For candidates from Nigeria, India, Pakistan or Brazil with excellent grades and a clear research record, Switzerland is the ceiling of what a doctoral salary can be — but apply to it as a stretch target alongside safer systems, not instead of them.

China: the CSC scholarship route

The Chinese Government Scholarship, administered by the China Scholarship Council, is the most affordable fully funded route to a doctorate abroad. The package for doctoral students is CNY 3,500 per month, plus full tuition waiver, free university housing and comprehensive medical insurance, verified on official university scholarship pages such as Harbin Institute of Technology's.

Admission runs in two coupled steps: first you secure acceptance at a Chinese university, then you apply for the CSC scholarship through the university route or through the embassy route in your home country. Most application windows fall in the first half of the calendar year for September entry, so for 2027 the work starts now: shortlist universities, contact prospective supervisors, and prepare the study plan that the CSC weighs heavily. For engineers and natural scientists whose fields are strong in Chinese universities, the value per dollar of application effort is unmatched.

Cross-border money: MSCA networks and the Max Planck schools

Two European structures pay the same salary regardless of which country you sit in. Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks now offer a monthly living allowance of €4,010 plus a mobility allowance of €710 — raised from €3,400 and €600 — adjusted by a country-specific correction coefficient. You apply to an individual position inside a funded network, and the network, not the university, sets your pay.

Germany's Max Planck Society runs its own parallel universe. There is no central application: individual doctoral positions are posted year-round across its institutes, the International Max Planck Research Schools have structured calls, and the Max Planck Schools run their own selection. Two verified anchors for the 2027 cycle: IMPRS-IS closes applications on 15 November 2026, and the Max Planck Schools close on 1 December 2026.

For finding all of these positions in one place, EURAXESS, the European Commission's official research careers portal, aggregates funded doctoral vacancies across the entire continent, including MSCA network positions. Treat it as your daily search habit during the application year, alongside the funding listings on Truescho's opportunities board.

The paperwork that quietly decides your eligibility

Strong candidates lose funded offers over documents, not merit. Degrees from most countries must be legalized — apostille in treaty countries, or attestation through ministries and embassies elsewhere — and translations usually must be certified. The United States and Canada often expect a credential evaluation such as WES on top, and that process alone can take more than a month.

Language requirements vary more than applicants expect. UK studentships normally expect a formal English test; many German, Dutch and Scandinavian positions accept proof that your previous degree was taught in English, and a supervisor can sometimes waive the requirement outright after interviewing you in English. Always check the vacancy's language section before paying for a test.

The document set that never changes: a two-to-four page academic CV, certified transcripts and certificates, two or three recommendation letters, the research proposal where required, and a motivation letter where the position is an employment contract. Our academic CV template covers the first item, and the general master and PhD admission steps guide walks the full checklist.

The 12-month plan for a September 2027 start

If you are reading this in late 2026, you are at the ideal starting point. Funded positions are typically filled 9 to 12 months before the start date, and DAAD scholarship deadlines fall 10 to 12 months ahead — which means the candidates holding offers in spring 2027 are the ones who started writing emails this autumn.

Frequently asked questions about funded PhDs abroad

How do I get a fully funded PhD abroad from a developing country?

Match your degree history to a funding model: without a master's, target US programs that admit from a bachelor's; with a strong master's thesis, email German, Dutch and Scandinavian groups; with a sharp proposal, compete for UK studentships. Then start 10-12 months early — funded positions are typically filled 9-12 months before the start date.

Which countries pay PhD students a monthly salary?

Germany pays a TV-L E13 contract, usually 50-75 percent of a 2026 table of €4,759-€6,765 gross. Sweden pays 31,600-34,000+ SEK per month, Norway 550,800-565,000 NOK per year, the Netherlands €3,204-€4,051 from July 2026, and France a minimum of €2,300 gross from January 2026.

How much is the UKRI PhD stipend for 2026/27?

£21,805 per year, tax-free — a 4.9 percent increase from £20,780 in 2025/26, effective from 1 October 2026, with roughly £2,000 extra for London-based students. This is the minimum across UKRI-funded studentships, so some programs pay more, almost none pay less.

Is a PhD in Germany free for international students?

Most public universities charge no tuition fees for doctoral researchers, so the word free is partly true. The real point is income: DAAD scholarship holders receive €1,400 per month, and employed doctoral researchers on TV-L E13 contracts at 50-75 percent usually earn more than scholarship holders anywhere.

How do I find and email a potential PhD supervisor?

Search recent papers in your subfield, shortlist professors whose last four years of work overlap your topic, and email each one individually: one paragraph on their specific paper, one on your matching background, and a direct question about openings. Never send one identical email to many professors at once.

What is the difference between a PhD in the USA and PhD in Europe?

US programs admit you to a department: about two years of coursework, then a qualifying exam, then dissertation research, over roughly five to six years. European doctorates start research immediately under a supervisor or hired position, usually lasting three to four years with a salary or employment contract.

When should I apply for a September 2027 PhD start?

Now. DAAD advises applying 10-12 months in advance, and funded positions are typically filled 9-12 months before the start date. Concrete anchors for 2027: IMPRS-IS closes 15 November 2026, Max Planck Schools close 1 December 2026, and US deadlines cluster between December 2026 and February 2027.

Is IELTS mandatory for funded PhD positions in Europe?

Not always. Many continental positions accept proof that your previous degree was taught in English, and a supervisor can sometimes waive the requirement after an interview in English. UK studentships usually expect a formal test, so check each vacancy's language section before paying for IELTS.

Our verdict: which pathway fits your profile

Decide with two questions. First, do you hold a master's with a thesis you can defend in one paragraph? If no, the United States is your model — it admits from a bachelor's and folds the master's into a funded five-to-six-year program. If yes, Europe opens up. Second, is your strongest asset a topic or a track record? Topic people — those who can write a sharp two-page proposal — should lead with the UK studentship route and back it with Dutch and Scandinavian vacancies. Track-record people — solid grades, publications or years of lab work — should lead with supervisor emails to Germany, Switzerland and the Max Planck network, where one professor's yes changes everything.

Budget shapes the final call. If application costs are the binding constraint, the CSC route in China offers a complete package — stipend, tuition, housing, insurance — with the smallest cash outlay. If you want employee status, paid vacation and pension from day one, aim squarely at Scandinavia, the Netherlands and Switzerland. And if your profile is exceptional and you want the widest network, track MSCA Doctoral Networks on EURAXESS all year, because positions open continuously.

Whichever model you choose, the calendar is the same one: shortlist and email this autumn, apply through the winter, interview in spring, legalize documents by early summer, start in September 2027. The system rewards early, specific, well-documented applicants — and punishes generic ones regardless of talent.
