Germany’s §81a Fast-Track Work Visa: €411, Two-Month Recognition, Three-Week Decision
Last updated: September 2026
On 19 September 2026 we re-read the current text of Section 81a of the German Residence Act (AufenthG) and Section 47 of the Residence Ordinance (AufenthV). A German employer can open the “accelerated skilled-worker procedure” with the foreigner’s power of attorney. The statutory fee is €411. Recognition bodies generally have two months, the Federal Employment Agency one week, the visa appointment should follow within three weeks of preliminary approval, and a complete visa file is generally decided within a further three weeks. Those are stage clocks, not a guaranteed visa.
If you already hold a German job offer, this is the difference between a national visa that “may take several months” (Federal Foreign Office wording) and a procedure the employer can actually push. It is not a new visa type. It is a faster way to issue a visa you already qualify for.

Fast-track versus ordinary — the numbers that matter
| Stage | Ordinary national visa | §81a accelerated procedure | Who owns it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualification recognition | No single national clock | Generally 2 months | Foreigners authority starts the file |
| Federal Employment Agency (BA) consent | Buried in the visa queue | Generally 1 week | Foreigners authority requests it |
| Preliminary visa consent | Not a separate published stage | Issued when conditions are met | Foreigners authority |
| Mission appointment | Weeks to months | Within 3 weeks after preliminary approval | German mission abroad |
| Decision on a complete visa file | “Several months,” purpose-dependent | Generally 3 more weeks | German mission |
| Government fees | National visa fee €75 | €411 for §81a plus the visa fee | Employer / applicant |
The Federal Foreign Office is blunt: long-stay national visas can take several months depending on purpose and case. §81a compresses defined stages if the competent foreigners authority accepts the employer’s agreement. Missing translations, a regulated-profession licence, or a recognition refusal stop the clock.
What Section 81a actually is
The employer applies at the foreigners authority that covers the workplace, using the worker’s power of attorney. The law lists the residence purposes that can ride this track: vocational training (§16a), recognition measures (§16d), skilled workers with vocational training (§18a), skilled workers with academic training (§18b), the special experienced-worker route in §18c(3), and the EU Blue Card (§18g).
You cannot file §81a yourself from Lagos, Manila or São Paulo. The employer signs an agreement that records contacts, the power of attorney, the documents, the deadlines, and the consequences if either side misses them. Third parties (a lawyer or a relocation firm) may be sub-authorised.
Subsection 4 also pulls in spouses and unmarried minor children when their visa applications are filed in temporal connection with yours.
If the recognition body finds the qualification is not yet equivalent but can become equivalent through a compensatory measure, the procedure can continue toward entry under §16d instead of dying on the spot.

The €411 fee is not the visa fee
AufenthV §47(1) no. 15 sets €411 for “conducting the accelerated skilled-worker procedure under Section 81a.” That is separate from the €75 national visa fee published by the Foreign Office, and separate from sworn translations, credential evaluation and medical insurance.
The government collects the €411 from the employer side of the file. Some companies later deduct it from salary; that is a private deal, not a change in the ordinance.
Do not confuse this fee with 2026 Blue Card salary floors: €50,700 gross a year for standard occupations and €45,934.20 for shortage occupations and recent graduates, announced by the Federal Ministry of the Interior on 18 December 2025 (BAnz AT 18.12.2025 B3). Those are contract numbers. The fee is €411. Full salary rules sit in our EU Blue Card Germany 2026 guide.
How the employer file actually moves
- Confirm the contract maps to §18a, §18b, §18g, or a listed training/recognition purpose.
- Take a written power of attorney from the worker.
- Sign the foreigners-authority agreement with a document list and deadlines.
- The authority opens recognition or university-degree assessment and must invite the employer within three working days when extra documents are requested or a decision arrives.
- BA consent is requested where the law still requires it.
- The German mission abroad is told a visa application is coming.
- If the conditions are met, the authority issues preliminary consent. You take that paper to your appointment.
A complete visa application at the mission is generally decided within three weeks. Incomplete files do not start that clock.

Which title should you put on the form?
§81a is the method. The title is still Blue Card, §18a or §18b.
- Job offer at or above €50,700 (or €45,934.20 in a shortage/IT/recent-graduate case) and a recognised degree → EU Blue Card, accelerated with §81a if the employer will pay. Settlement is faster (21–27 months with B1).
- Vocational qualification recognised in Germany, salary below the Blue Card line → §18a.
- University degree, contract below the Blue Card line → §18b.
- No job offer yet → not §81a. Use the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) and the €1,091 monthly funds rule, including the two groups that skip the six-point test.
English-language work without daily German is compared in working in Germany in 2026 without German.
A case from Lagos: 12 weeks, not “several months”
Tunde, 31, a civil engineer from Lagos, signed a Berlin offer at €46,200 in July 2026 — above the shortage threshold, below the general Blue Card line. The mission’s ordinary appointment board showed late autumn. The employer opened §81a, paid €411, and ran recognition through the Berlin foreigners authority. Anabin listed the university as H+. Preliminary consent arrived in week 9; the Abuja appointment in week 11; the visa sticker in week 12. The three-week decision clock started only after he added a missing apostille. Fast-track compressed the German authorities. It did not invent documents he did not have.
Mistakes that waste the €411
- Filing without a live power of attorney.
- Treating €411 as a success fee. Preliminary consent is not a visa.
- Skipping the licence to practise for a regulated profession (health, some engineering roles).
- Mixing up ZAB/anabin degree assessment with chamber-of-crafts vocational recognition — different bodies.
- Booking flights before the sticker is in the passport.
- Arriving at the mission without health insurance or the documents listed in that mission’s leaflet; the three-week clock never starts.
What this means for you
Ask the hiring manager in the first call: “Will you open Section 81a?” A company that refuses is often unwilling to pay €411 or to staff the foreigners-authority file. That is a signal about the offer, not about German law.
If you do not have an offer, do not pay anyone who sells a “fast German visa without an employer.” §81a is employer-led. Browse Truescho jobs and, if study is the first step, scholarships and opportunities.

Frequently asked questions
Does Germany’s §81a fast-track guarantee a work visa?
No. It binds the foreigners authority to compressed recognition, BA and preliminary-consent stages. The mission still decides the visa after security, identity and document checks. A recognition refusal or a thin file stops the clock.
How much does the accelerated skilled-worker procedure cost in 2026?
€411 under AufenthV §47(1) no. 15, plus the €75 national visa fee. Translations, evaluations and insurance are extra.
How long does recognition take inside §81a?
Recognition generally has two months. The Federal Employment Agency generally has one week. The appointment should occur within three weeks of preliminary approval, and a complete visa application is generally decided within three further weeks. These are stage limits, not a door-to-door promise.
Can I apply for §81a without a job offer?
No. The employer files with your power of attorney. Job-seekers use the Opportunity Card, not this track.
Does fast-track cover my family?
Yes — spouse and unmarried minor children if their visa applications are filed in temporal connection, per §81a(4).
Your next step
Get the power-of-attorney template and the foreigners-authority agreement before you pay another translator. Check that the contract’s purpose is §18a, §18b or §18g. If the salary clears the Blue Card line, put the Blue Card on the form and §81a on the process. If you still have no contract, start with the Opportunity Card 2026 guide, not this page.
