Turkey has become a realistic study-abroad destination for students from Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Vietnam and Brazil who want an accredited degree without six-figure debt. But the search for the cheapest private universities in Turkey for international students is full of traps. Most articles mix fees from different years, never say whether a program runs in Turkish or English, and copy agency numbers that no university website confirms.
Here is the short version. The cheapest verified bachelor's is at Nişantaşı University: 2,950 US dollars a year for Turkish-taught programs (2026-2027 list). The cheapest English-taught bachelor's is 3,600 dollars at Işık University. Medicine starts at 14,500 dollars in Turkish, or 12,000 dollars after Beykent's official 50% scholarship. Most universities in this guide do not require the YÖS exam.
We built this guide differently. Every fee below was read from an official university website on October 20, 2026. Each number carries its academic year and its study language, because the Turkish-track and English-track price of the same program can differ by 6,000 dollars a year. If you are also weighing free or low-cost public options, start with our study in Turkey overview.

The documented fee table: 20 verified rows
Every figure in this table was read from the university's official website on October 20, 2026. The "after-discount fee" column shows only discounts the university itself publishes: upfront-payment, cash-payment or scholarship columns on official fee pages. Nothing comes from agencies or blogs.

Three reading notes before you scroll on. First, Gelişim's newest published fee list is dated 2024-2025, so treat its numbers as a floor that may rise. Second, Işık and Kadir Has publish current prices without labeling the academic year. Third, Istanbul Ticaret charges 6,000 dollars for Turkish-taught and 7,000 dollars for English-taught bachelor's programs (2026-2027), and Beykent's English-taught bachelor's is 6,722 dollars before its scholarship brings it to 3,361.
Cheapest university by field: the quick index
Here is the shortcut by major. Every price below is documented in the official table above and repeated with its academic year in the field sections.
- Medicine: Nişantaşı University, 14,500 dollars (TR, 2026-2027). Cheapest after a published discount: Beykent, 12,000 dollars (TR, official 50% column, 2026-2027).
- Dentistry: Istanbul Gelişim, 13,000 dollars (TR, 2024-2025 list); Nişantaşı, 13,500 dollars (TR, 2026-2027). Cheapest after discount: Beykent, 11,000 dollars (50% column, 2026-2027).
- Pharmacy: Okan, 8,000 dollars (EN, 2026-2027); Biruni, 9,000 dollars (TR cash price, 2026-2027).
- Computer engineering: Nişantaşı, 3,250 dollars (TR, 2026-2027); Gelişim, 3,500 dollars (TR, 2024-2025 list). Cheapest English track: Işık, 4,800 dollars (no year published).
- Business administration: Beykent, 3,056 dollars after the official 50% column (2026-2027); Nişantaşı, 3,250 dollars (TR). Cheapest English track: Işık, 3,600 dollars.
What each field really costs in 2026
Medicine
Turkish-taught medicine is where the savings are. The documented ladder for 2026-2027 runs: Nişantaşı 14,500 dollars, then Üsküdar 18,000 (16,200 paid upfront), Biruni 19,000 (17,100 cash), Okan 19,500 (18,525 with the 5% upfront column), İstinye 23,000 (21,850 if you pay the full year at once), and Beykent 24,000 before its official 50% column cuts it to 12,000.
English-taught medicine costs several thousand more at every university: Biruni 21,000 (18,900 cash), Okan 22,500 (21,375 upfront), Üsküdar 24,000 (21,600 upfront), Altınbaş 25,000 (22,500 upfront, or 21,250 cash), İstinye 29,000 (27,550 full payment). At İstinye the gap between the Turkish and English track of the same program is 6,000 dollars a year.
One extra cost to plan for at medical and dental schools: Üsküdar asks a 5,000-dollar registration deposit for medicine and dentistry, against 1,000 dollars for other programs.
Dentistry
Dentistry starts lower than medicine. The verified Turkish-track ladder: Gelişim 13,000 dollars (2024-2025 list), Nişantaşı 13,500, Okan 15,000 (14,250 upfront), Üsküdar 16,000 (14,400 upfront), Biruni 19,000 (17,100 cash), İstinye 20,000 (19,000 full payment), and both Beykent and Altınbaş at 22,000. Beykent's 50% column brings dentistry down to 11,000 dollars, the cheapest documented price in the country.
English tracks: Nişantaşı charges 17,500 dollars, Gelişim 17,250 (2024-2025 list), İstinye 24,500 (23,275 full payment), Üsküdar 22,000 (19,800 upfront), Biruni 21,000 (18,900 cash), Okan 18,000 (17,100 upfront). Altınbaş describes its program as 30% English and lists 19,800 dollars after the 10% upfront discount, or 18,700 cash.
Pharmacy
Pharmacy is the most affordable clinical field. Okan's English track costs 8,000 dollars (7,600 upfront) and is, unusually, cheaper than its Turkish track at 9,000 (8,550 upfront). Biruni charges 10,000 in Turkish (9,000 cash) or 12,000 in English (10,800 cash). Altınbaş lists 12,000 in English, falling to 10,800 upfront or 10,200 cash (2025-2026). İstinye charges 14,000 in Turkish (13,300 full payment) or 15,000 in English (14,250).
Engineering
For Turkish-taught engineering, Nişantaşı's 3,250 dollars and Gelişim's 3,500 dollars (2024-2025 list) are the documented floor. English-taught engineering starts at 4,800 dollars at Işık, then Okan 5,000 (4,750 upfront), Biruni 5,000 (4,500 cash), Üsküdar 5,600 (5,000 upfront) and Altınbaş 6,000 (5,100 upfront, or 4,800 cash).
Two universities in this price band hold MÜDEK accreditation for their engineering faculties: Okan's is valid until September 30, 2026, and Kadir Has's until September 30, 2027. Kadir Has charges a flat 20,000 dollars for every bachelor's program and states only that "scholarships are available" without publishing a percentage.
Business and economics
Business is the easiest field to study cheaply. Beykent's 50% column lands at 3,056 dollars, Nişantaşı charges 3,250 in Turkish (4,400 in English), Gelişim 3,500 in Turkish (4,000 in English, 2024-2025 list) and Işık 3,600 in English. Istanbul Ticaret charges 6,000 in Turkish and 7,000 in English (2026-2027).
At the top of the band, Altınbaş lists business at 6,000 dollars in English (5,100 upfront, 4,800 cash) and economics at 5,000 (4,250 upfront, 4,000 cash). Kadir Has, ranked around 500th worldwide in the Times Higher Education Business and Economics subject ranking 2025, charges its flat 20,000 dollars.
The real fee after discount: what is actually verified
This is where most comparisons go wrong. Agents love to advertise "up to 75% scholarships" at Turkish private universities. After reading every official fee page, here is the honest picture of what the universities themselves publish for 2026-2027.
- 5% for upfront payment: Okan publishes it as an official column (for example, medicine 19,500 becomes 18,525 dollars). İstinye's equivalent is a full-year payment price of about 5% off (medicine 23,000 becomes 21,850 dollars).
- 10% for upfront or cash payment: Üsküdar (medicine 18,000 becomes 16,200), Biruni (medicine 19,000 becomes 17,100 cash) and Altınbaş (medicine 25,000 becomes 22,500, 2025-2026 list).
- 15% for full cash payment: only Altınbaş publishes this tier (medicine 21,250 dollars).
- 50% scholarship column: only Beykent. Its fee page prints a second column with the halved price for every program, including medicine (24,000 to 12,000 dollars) and dentistry (22,000 to 11,000 dollars).
- No percentage published: Kadir Has states that scholarships exist but prints no figure.
Now the myth-busting. Across the twelve universities we audited, no official page offers a blanket 25%, 50% or 75% discount, with the single exception of Beykent's 50% column. If an agency quotes you a "75% scholarship price", ask them to show the university page that prints it. Genuine scholarship routes do exist outside the universities, above all the government Türkiye Bursları program, which funds around 15,000 of the roughly 340,000 international students in Turkey according to YTB, the official agency for Turks abroad and related communities. Our scholarships in Turkey guide covers those routes in detail, and documented funded openings such as the full Sabancı University scholarship, sit on our opportunities board.
If comparing list prices, discount columns and language tracks feels heavy, a 30-minute video consultation with a Turkey specialist reviews your GPA, budget and target major and returns a shortlist of 5 private universities with real after-discount fees, admission requirements, study language and deadlines; delivered within 3 days, priced 15 EUR.
Accreditation and recognition: what makes these degrees count
A low fee means nothing if the degree is not licensed. Every university in the fee table above, plus Aydın, Atlas and Arel from the group we excluded from the table, is a foundation (vakıf) university licensed by YÖK, the Council of Higher Education. We checked each name against YÖK's official list of foundation universities on October 20, 2026. Turkey currently has 75 foundation universities out of 208 higher education institutions in total.
The scale is worth knowing. According to the YÖK 2025-2026 statistics bulletin, 838,664 students study at foundation universities, within a national total of 6,301,434 students. YTB, the state agency for international students, counts roughly 340,000 international students in the country, so you would be joining a large, established system rather than an experiment.
Beyond the license, quality labels sit at three levels. YÖKak, the national quality council, announced institutional accreditation for 31 universities on March 25, 2025; Istanbul Gelişim is the only university from our cheap list named in that announcement, with full institutional accreditation for 5 years. For engineering, MÜDEK accreditation (recognized in the Washington Accord network and through the EUR-ACE label) currently covers Okan's engineering faculty until September 30, 2026 and Kadir Has's until September 30, 2027. We found no official evidence that any university on the cheap list holds ABET, AACSB or EQUIS accreditation, so treat any agency claim of those labels with caution.
Rankings are not the same as accreditation, but one name stands out: Kadir Has appears in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 within the top 1,000 (one of 15 Turkish universities), in the THE Impact Rankings 2025 at 201-300 out of 2,318 universities, and in QS Europe 2025 at 551-600.
For your own country, do one extra check before paying anything. Degree recognition is decided nation by nation, and we will not invent lists. The safe rule: open your ministry of education's equivalency or accreditation portal and search the exact university name. Some ministries publish country lists that include Turkey; others, like Saudi Arabia's, evaluate university by university through an official portal; the United States has no central ministry, so recognition runs through institutional databases and credential evaluators. If your ministry lists private universities separately from public ones, search the private category.
The encouraging part: cheap does not mean unrecognized. Many of the cheapest private universities in Turkey for international students hold exactly the same YÖK license as universities charging five times more, and the license is what your ministry checks first.
Your real first-year cost: prep year, deposit and living costs
Tuition is only one line of the budget. A realistic first year has up to four lines: tuition, an English or Turkish preparatory year if you need one, a registration deposit, and living costs.
Preparatory year fees (documented): Beykent lists 1,731 to 3,565 dollars depending on level, İstinye charges 3,000 for its Turkish prep year and 8,000 for English, Üsküdar 4,400, and Istanbul Ticaret 7,000. If you already speak the language of instruction, ask your university about its exemption test; passing it can skip the year entirely, which is why the cheapest documented prep price (Beykent at 1,731 dollars) matters mostly as a comparison anchor.
Deposits (documented): Üsküdar asks 1,000 dollars (rising to 5,000 for medicine and dentistry) and Istanbul Ticaret 1,000, both deducted from your tuition; Ticaret's deposit is refundable only if you prove a visa refusal.
Living costs: Numbeo, a price-tracking database, reports for October 2026 that a single person in Istanbul needs about 793.2 dollars a month excluding rent (39,325.5 liras), an inexpensive restaurant meal at 600 liras, a monthly transport pass at 3,298 liras, and a one-bedroom flat in the city center at 6,058 liras a month. Ankara is cheaper: living costs without rent are 9.6% lower, rents are 29.5% lower, and with rent included the city is 15.3% cheaper than Istanbul, with an inexpensive meal at 500 liras.
Now the transparent math for the cheapest documented year. Take Nişantaşı's 2,950-dollar Turkish-taught bachelor's, add twelve months of Numbeo's Istanbul costs without rent (793.2 × 12 = 9,518.4, call it 9,500), and the total is about 12,450 dollars: a complete first year under 13,000 dollars before rent. Rent is the big variable, which is why most new students share flats. We deliberately publish no cost numbers we could not verify, so treat these figures as a floor, and after arrival budget time for the student residence permit application.
Admission requirements: what you actually submit
The standard application file for a Turkish private university is short. You need your high school diploma, your transcript of grades, a passport copy, and proof of language (English for English tracks, Turkish for Turkish tracks) or acceptance of a preparatory year instead. Some universities ask for a photo and a small application fee.
Here is the part that surprises most applicants: most private universities do not require YÖS, the entrance exam used by public universities. Admission runs on your school record plus the language condition. Public universities are a different game, and if you want to compare, read our piece on Turkish public universities without YÖS.
Applications go directly through each university's online portal, and windows differ from one university and one intake to another. Our Turkish universities application dates guide tracks the windows, and the step-by-step application walkthrough shows the full process from document translation to the acceptance letter. One practical tip that saves money: ask each admissions office by email to confirm the after-discount fee in writing before you accept an offer.
A worked example: planning a 12,450-dollar first year
Take a realistic profile: a student with a strong transcript, a hard budget ceiling of about 13,000 dollars for the first year everything included, and a preference for a business degree. Most students in this position start with agency pages promising 75% scholarships; comparing those pages with the official numbers above is what turns a risky decision into a planned one.
Three documented options fit that profile. Işık offers an English-taught business-related bachelor's at 3,600 dollars, with no academic year printed on the fee page. Gelişim offers 3,500 dollars in Turkish, but the newest official list is dated 2024-2025, so it works as a possible floor rather than a promise. Nişantaşı publishes 2,950 dollars for its cheapest Turkish-taught bachelor's group, including economics, in a fresh 2026-2027 PDF.
Choosing the Nişantaşı track means the first year will include intensive Turkish study alongside courses. The budget then builds directly from Numbeo's October 2026 Istanbul figures: 793.2 dollars a month without rent, so 12 × 793.2 = 9,518.4, rounded to 9,500. Tuition 2,950 plus 9,500 gives 12,450 dollars, under the ceiling even before rent. To cover housing, a shared flat is the standard answer, since a central one-bedroom alone would cost 6,058 liras a month, and daily expectations should sit at 600-lira meals and a 3,298-lira transport pass.
The fallback deserves the same discipline: if the Turkish track proves too hard, Işık's 3,600-dollar English track keeps the total near 13,100 dollars before rent, and Beykent's 50% scholarship column at 3,056 dollars is a third documented route. No invented discounts, no agency prices, just numbers anyone can screenshot from official pages.
Universities we checked but left out, and why
Transparency about method matters as much as the numbers themselves. Four universities did not pass our verification check on October 20, 2026, and we excluded them from the fee table rather than guess.
- Istanbul Aydın: the official website was locked behind a Cloudflare block during verification, and the only official fee PDF we could reach was dated 2018-2019, far too old to quote.
- Fenerbahçe University: the official website could not be reached from our research network on the verification date.
- Atlas University: the official fee list is a scanned PDF with no readable text.
- Istanbul Arel: the newest official fee list on its international site is dated 2023-2024.
To be clear, Aydın, Atlas and Arel all appear on YÖK's official list of licensed foundation universities (Fenerbahçe's site was unreachable, so we could not complete its check), and Arel's engineering faculty even holds MÜDEK accreditation valid until September 30, 2030. We left these four out because we could not verify current fees to our standard, not because of any quality judgment. If you consider one of them, ask the admissions office directly for the current fee list and its academic year.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the cheapest private university in Turkey for international students?
Based on official 2026-2027 lists, Nişantaşı University in Istanbul offers the cheapest documented bachelor's at 2,950 US dollars per year in Turkish-taught programs. For English-taught degrees, Işık University charges 3,600 dollars, with no year printed on its page. Beykent's official 50% scholarship column brings any Turkish-taught bachelor's down to 3,056 dollars.
How much are tuition fees at Turkish private universities in 2026?
Verified 2026-2027 fees range from 2,950 dollars for a Turkish-taught bachelor's to 29,000 dollars for English-taught medicine at İstinye. The practical middle ground: engineering and business at 3,250 to 6,000 dollars, dentistry from 13,000, pharmacy from 8,000. Okan, İstinye, Üsküdar, Biruni and Altınbaş all publish 5-15% payment discounts.
Can I study medicine in English at an affordable Turkish private university?
Yes, but English-taught medicine carries a premium. Documented English tracks run from 21,000 dollars at Biruni (18,900 cash) to 29,000 at İstinye (27,550 full payment). Turkish-taught medicine starts at 14,500 dollars at Nişantaşı, and Beykent's 50% column makes its Turkish medicine 12,000 dollars.
Are Turkish private university degrees recognized internationally?
Every university listed here is licensed by YÖK, Turkey's higher education council, and Turkish degrees are widely accepted abroad. Beyond the license, Gelişim holds YÖKak institutional accreditation for 5 years, and Okan and Kadir Has hold MÜDEK engineering accreditation. Always confirm your specific university through your own ministry of education's equivalency portal.
Do Turkish private universities require YÖS or SAT for admission?
Most private universities do not require YÖS, the exam used mainly by public universities. The core file is a high school diploma, a transcript, a passport copy, and language proof or a preparatory year. SAT scores are sometimes requested for scholarship review, and some medicine programs interview candidates, so check each program page.
Istanbul or Ankara: which city is cheaper for international students?
Ankara is cheaper. Numbeo's October 2026 comparison shows living costs without rent 9.6% lower than Istanbul, rents 29.5% lower, and the total with rent included 15.3% lower, with an inexpensive meal at 500 liras versus 600 in Istanbul. Istanbul, at about 793.2 dollars a month without rent, offers far more university choices.
How much does the English preparatory year cost in Turkey?
Documented prices differ sharply: 1,731 dollars at Beykent (rising to 3,565 by level), 3,000 dollars for the Turkish track at İstinye, 4,400 at Üsküdar, 7,000 at Istanbul Ticaret and 8,000 for İstinye's English prep year. Ask your university about its exemption test before enrolling; passing it can waive the year entirely.
What to do next
You now have what most articles never give you: verified prices with years, languages and official discounts. Here is a short action plan that keeps you in control.
- Build a shortlist of three programs from the table using two filters only: your real budget and your study language. If Turkish-taught is acceptable, the 2,950-3,500 dollar band is open to you; English-only applicants should anchor on Işık's 3,600 dollars.
- Open each university's official fee page (linked in the sources below) and screenshot today's price with the academic year visible. Pages change, and a screenshot protects you in any dispute.
- Email the admissions office and ask for the after-discount fee in writing: upfront-payment, cash-payment or scholarship column. One email can save 975 to 1,900 dollars on medicine.
- Check your ministry of education's equivalency portal for each shortlisted university before paying any deposit.
- Prepare the file early: diploma, transcript, translations and passport copy. Then track intake windows in the application dates guide.
While you compare costs, it is also worth scanning funded routes with completely different economics, from government scholarships to university-funded openings, in our curated study opportunities board.
