Yes — if you will actually attend live classes. As of 19 September 2026, the official English Online plans page advertises 30% off the first 3 months on Gold and Platinum, plus a 7-day free trial. The platform's own pricing API returns £82.60/month for Gold (from £118) and £113/month for Platinum (from £161) when promotional code SEPEOL303M26 is applied, for three billing periods. After that, full price resumes unless you cancel. Silver has no free trial on the marketing table. If you only want daily AI chat, this product is the wrong spend.
That is the whole offer. The rest of this page is the cost math, the credit rules, the cancellation traps in the official terms, and when a cheaper tutor marketplace or an AI app is the better buy.

What you are actually buying
English Online is a live-class subscription from the British Council, not a vocabulary app and not a local teaching-centre timetable. You pay monthly (or buy a prepaid package), receive class credits, and book:
- Group classes: 55 minutes, 1 credit, up to 10 students
- Private classes: 25 minutes, 2 credits (Gold and Platinum)
- Live25 webinars: 25-minute grammar or pronunciation sessions, capped per plan
- Theme-based AI speaking tasks after classes (full on Platinum, limited on Gold, one theme on Silver)
- A British Council certificate stating CEFR level and study hours, plus digital badges
The homepage cites 45,000+ learners and a 4.5/5 rating from 41,318 reviews. Classes run on Zoom. Chrome or Firefox is recommended. Your Zoom display name must match your account name. Camera and microphone stay on. If you cannot sit for 55 uninterrupted minutes, stop here.
Do not confuse this product with free LearnEnglish materials or with in-person British Council centres in your city. Those are different catalogues.

The September 30% offer, verified on the brand site
What the official pages show right now:
- Headline: “Start learning today! Save up to 30%” for the first 3 months.
- Gold and Platinum CTAs: “7-day free trial & 30% off”, with purchase links that include code
SEPEOL303M26. - Silver CTA: “Buy now” — no trial on that row.
- The pricing API (
purchases.getPrices) returnsdiscountCode: SEPEOL303M26anddiscountPeriods: 3. - The countdown widget in the page source is set from 21 September 2026 08:00 UTC to 24 September 2026 08:00 UTC. The 30% copy and code were already live on 19 September, before that clock starts. We will not invent an “ends 30 September” date the site does not print.

| Plan | Credits / month | Live classes | Full price | First 3 months with SEPEOL303M26 | 7-day trial |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silver | 5 | Group only | £63 | £44.10 | No |
| Gold | 10 | Group + private | £118 | £82.60 | Yes (2 credits) |
| Platinum | 15 | Group + private + premium business | £161 | £113 | Yes (2 credits) |
| Self-Study | 0 live | Self-paced content | £7 | £4.90 | No |
Three-month Gold outlay at the promo rate: £247.80. Stay nine more months at £118 and the 12-month total on monthly billing is about £1,310. The prepaid Gold 12-month package is listed at £942 in the same API without the promo code (120 credits). If you already know you will stay a year, prepaid beats “30% off monthly for a quarter.” The monthly promo is a trial-to-decision tool, not the cheapest annual path.

How credits burn (this is where people overpay)
A Gold subscriber who books two group classes a week uses roughly 8 of 10 credits. The leftover two cover one private 25-minute session. A Platinum subscriber who wants three group classes a week uses 12 credits and still has 3 left — not quite two privates.
Live25 sessions do not use the same credit pool, but they are capped: 4 (Silver), 6 (Gold), 8 (Platinum) per month.
Cancel a class more than 24 hours ahead and the credit comes back. Cancel inside 24 hours and the credit is gone. If the British Council cancels the class, credits are reissued (the terms also describe a two-credit reissue in some flexible-course cases).
Unused monthly credits are not a savings account you can stockpile indefinitely the way some apps allow. You get a fresh allocation when the subscription payment posts. If you skip two weeks of travel, you still paid for those weeks.
Per-class math at the promo rate, assuming you use every credit on group classes:
- Silver: ~£8.80 per 55-minute group class
- Gold: ~£8.30
- Platinum: ~£7.50
At full price those figures jump to about £12.60 / £11.80 / £10.70. Independent tutors on open marketplaces often charge $5–$25 per hour with no British Council certificate and no shared CEFR syllabus. You are paying for the brand, the quality control, and the booking grid — not for the cheapest minute of speaking time.
Trial, card on file, auto-renew — from the terms, not from forums
The official terms of sale are more important than the discount headline.
- Eligible plans for a trial are listed on the plans pages. Today that is Gold and Platinum for 7 days.
- You must give payment details to start the trial. The paid plan is charged on the first day after the trial unless you cancel first.
- One trial per user. Extra emails to reset the trial can get the trial cancelled.
- Monthly plans renew automatically. Cancel from Account status. The terms recommend cancelling at least 48 hours before the next billing date because cancellation may not process instantly.
- After the first paid charge: a 14-day cancellation window with a full refund if you have not attended any class. Attend a class in that window and the refund goes away.
- After day 14: cancellation stops future renewals; you keep leftover credits until the end of the billing month; no pro-rata refund.
- Prepaid packages: 14-day refund window if you have not attended a class; after that, no refund.
Support: [email protected]
The practical sequence: start Gold, book one group and one private inside the 7 days, then either cancel or stay. Do not “test” a class after you have been billed if you still want the 14-day refund.

Who should pay — and who should walk away
Pay for it if you need a recognised training brand on a CV, weekly human correction, and a timetable you can book across time zones. Platinum is the plan for workplace English (presentations, meetings, documents). Gold is the default for most working adults who want one private session a week.
Walk away if your budget is under $20/month, if you cannot turn a camera on, if you need an official admissions test rather than a course certificate, or if you are building A2 English from zero with no cash — start with the free stack in best free websites to learn English or the six-month plan in learn English online for scholarship students.
A CEFR snapshot without paying: the on-site level test (email only), or EF SET in about 50 minutes. Neither replaces IELTS/TOEFL/PTE where a university or visa process demands a locked test date. See Duolingo vs IELTS vs TOEFL vs PTE and IELTS Online fees.
Honest alternatives
| Need | English Online | Talkpal | Tutor marketplace (italki / Preply) | Coursera |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Live human teacher | Yes, standardised | No | Yes, variable | Rare |
| Typical monthly cost | £44–£161 | Low tens of dollars | Whatever the tutor charges | Platform subscription |
| Certificate | British Council CEFR course certificate | No | Usually no | University/company certificate |
| Best use | Structured progress + CV signal | Daily cheap reps | Negotiate $/hour | Career credentials alongside language |
Use Talkpal as a daily layer under one British Council class a week, not as a substitute if you want a human interrupting your fossilised grammar. Use Coursera when the goal is a professional certificate and English is the medium — is Coursera Plus worth it covers the annual pass. We name marketplace tutors without linking them; we do not have those programmes, and a forced link would not help you.
IELTS Coach on the same British Council platform (Express / Lite / Complete) is a different SKU. Do not apply Gold's £82.60 promo price to Coach.
A Lagos product manager, 11 credits, one cancelled class
Ade, a product manager in Lagos, needed shorter answers in English stand-ups with a Berlin team. He started the Platinum trial, booked a business group class at 07:00 WAT and a private at 21:00. The group class was useful for turn-taking. The private class caught a habit: answering every question with a 40-second preamble.
He dropped to Gold after the trial because 15 credits were more than he attended. In week three he cancelled a class 6 hours before start and lost the credit — that is the 24-hour rule, not a glitch. At the end of month three he compared remaining-year cost on monthly Gold (~£1,062 for nine months) with the prepaid 12-month Gold list price (£942 for the year). He prepaid. Someone who misses two weeks a month should not.
Booking flow that actually survives the first week
- Open the official English Online page through the Truescho cloaker so the click is attributed to the approved domain.
- Take the free level test if you do not already know whether you are A2 or B1.
- Pick Gold if you want private classes; pick Platinum only if workplace English is the job. Silver looks cheaper and then blocks 1:1.
- Pay through Stripe. Keep the email receipt; the terms say you get one every month.
- Install Zoom, match your display name to the account, and book the first class more than 24 hours out so you can still cancel without burning a credit.
- On day six of the trial, either cancel in Account status or let the first charge hit on day eight.
- After week one, count unused credits. If you burned fewer than half, do not upgrade.
“24/7” means a global grid, not a teacher in your city at 21:00. A professional in Nairobi or Mumbai will see European morning slots and East Asian evening slots. If the only business-theme classes land after midnight local time, the trial will show that before you pay month one.
Prepaid 6-, 9- and 12-month packages exist in the same API without the September code: Silver 12 months £504 (60 credits), Gold 12 months £942 (120 credits), Platinum 12 months £1,368 (180 credits). Compare a year of discounted-then-full monthly billing against those list prices before you treat 30% off as the cheapest annual deal.
Premium business classes on Platinum are the only honest reason to skip Gold: presentations, meetings, workplace documents. General fluency does not need that tier.
Seven mistakes that waste the discount
- Treating the trial as card-free. The terms require payment details and auto-charge.
- Repeating the trial with a second email.
- Buying Silver and expecting the 7-day trial shown on Gold/Platinum.
- Cancelling a class inside 24 hours and arguing for the credit.
- Assuming the course certificate replaces IELTS for university admissions.
- Forgetting auto-renew and cancelling on the billing hour.
- Joining from a phone in traffic. The code of conduct expects a real class setup.
Frequently asked questions
How much does British Council English Online cost in 2026?
On 19 September 2026 the official pricing API listed Silver £63, Gold £118, Platinum £161 per month at full price. With SEPEOL303M26, Gold is £82.60 and Platinum £113 for the first three months. Checkout may convert to local currency via Stripe.
Does English Online include a free trial?
Gold and Platinum: 7 days, 2 credits (two group classes or one private). Silver: no trial on the official plans table. Cancel during the trial to avoid the first charge.
Gold vs Platinum vs Silver — which plan?
Silver is group-only with 5 credits. Gold adds private classes and 10 credits. Platinum adds more credits, premium business classes, and higher Live25 / AI-speaking limits. Need 1:1 correction? Skip Silver.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes, from Account status. During the trial: no charge. After first payment: 14-day refund if you attended no class, then cancel-at-period-end with no pro-rata refund. Cancel at least 48 hours before renewal.
Is the certificate accepted by employers and universities?
Employers may treat it as evidence of structured study with the British Council. Universities that require IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE will not treat it as a substitute test score.
English Online vs italki or Preply?
Marketplaces are usually cheaper per hour and let you pick a tutor. English Online is a single syllabus, vetted teachers, and a course certificate. Pay for the second if you want the brand and the structure.
Does the 30% last after three months?
No. The API flags discountPeriods: 3. Full price follows. The on-page countdown currently ends 24 September 2026 at 08:00 UTC.
Are classes live or recorded?
Live on Zoom. Pre/post tasks are self-paced. The product description does not offer a recorded-class substitute for attendance.

What to do next
Open the Gold trial if you want a human teacher this month and can cancel on day six if the timetable is wrong for your time zone. Do not start on Platinum unless workplace English is the job. Do not confuse a three-month coupon with the cheapest 12-month path. If you only need daily reps, use a low-cost AI tutor and keep this product off your card.
